MIT: Gas Storage in Bergermeer Reservoir is Safe

evaluate an earlier study on the risks of earth tremors compiled by the independent Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research.

The outcome of the MIT research confirmed the following TNO findings as accurate:

• Gas storage lowers the risk of earth tremors
• The maximum magnitude of earth tremors that could occur in the Bergermeer reservoir during the proposed injection and production phase is 3.9 on the Richter scale
• The risk of earth tremors with the maximum magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale is less than 1%

TAQA Energy B.V. Project Director Bergermeer Gas Storage, Jan Willem van Hoogstraten said: “MIT has reconfirmed the findings of the earlier TNO research and agrees that gas storage in the underground Bergermeer natural gas reservoir is safe.”
